Tree planting with the Aire Rivers Trust

Nick has lived and worked in the Bradford district for over 30 years. He joined ART in 2018 to work on the River Aire Care project, which was funded following the floods of 2015 to remove flood debris and engage local people to appreciate the river again and has spent the last 2 years working with communities on our DNAire project.

Billy was lured to the Yorkshire countryside in 2020, joining ART as catchment officer. He has successfully developed partnerships such as the Aire Catchment Network, delivering collaborative projects. Billy previously worked for Thames21, London’s River Trust where he worked on many projects such as the Environment Agency’s NFM pilot.

ART is a registered charity working to improve the River Aire beginning as a volunteer-led organisation in 2011. Through the hard work of this group of volunteers and Trustees, the trust has grown to its current 8 employees. Our success has been built upon working in partnership to deliver successful conservation projects, community events and habitat enhancements.

ART leads on community engagement aspects of the £2.3m DNAire project, designed to restore salmon to the river for the first time since the industrial revolution and to re-engage communities with their river. We manage relationships with a wide range of landowners, community groups and individuals in order to deliver positive benefits for all. This project is jointly funded by the Environment Agency, Yorkshire Water, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Craven District Council and others.

We design projects from conception to operational completion and work closely with landowners to incorporate their wider goals and business plans.

We share the White Rose Forest vision for the positive impact that more trees and other landscape improvements will have on NFM, carbon sequestration, biodiversity and water quality. It’s not just about planting trees. It’s about taking a holistic perspective and doing what is best for the landowner and landscape.

ART is dedicated to improving the catchment as a whole. We will work with you as an individual to make the most of your landholding. We manage both large and small contracts and our strength is in our ability to listen to you and understand your unique challenges, so we can find ways to address them.
